The Film & TV Charity Looking Glass Survey '22 - The Results

The results of The Film & TV Charity's Looking Glass ‘22 survey are out. Nearly 2,000 people in the industry responded to last year’s Looking Glass Survey, the third since 2019 when the Film and TV Charity uncovered a mental health emergency in the UK film and TV sector.

That survey’s shocking statistics drew industry-wide attention to problems many people were already keenly aware of, with poor mental health, bullying, harassment, and discrimination and extreme working conditions creating a perfect storm over the wellbeing of thje industry's workforce.

The follow-up to the 2019 survey, published in 2021, showed that the situation hadn’t worsened, even in the face of challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, with some small improvements indicating that perhaps the tide was beginning to turn and that the industry was starting to listen to the people who power it.

Although improvements to the mental health and wellbeing of our industry are slight, positive shifts are starting to be felt.

For last year’s survey, people in job roles right across the film and television spectrum answered questions about conditions, culture, and the industry’s capability to respond to issues linked to poor mental health, including bullying and harassment, line management, and financial pressures.

This third iteration begins to paint a picture of change in the industry. The improvements are small, but the positive shifts are significant in showing that ours is an industry that can properly look after the mental health and wellbeing of its workers.

  • 80% of respondents can see a positive change in culture and behaviours in the industry.
  • Reports of poor mental health within the industry fell - 24% in 2022 vs. 29% in 2021.
  • Reporting of bullying and harassment fell from 53% to 46%
